The downturn in the construction industry is preventing some developers from finishing their housing projects on time, so Pierce County is offering a temporary, one-time extension on development permits in light of the current economic climate.
Pierce County Council unanimously approved an ordinance on Dec. 2 that allows for a one- to two-year time extension for certain development-related applications and approvals. The move was recommended this fall in the Pierce County Economic Stimulus Report, which the council commissioned.
Reduced demand for new housing, a tightening credit market and scarce financing are the main factors leading to projects being delayed around the county. The county is extending these application deadlines by up to two years in hopes that more favorable economic conditions will have returned by that time.
An expired application or approval can cause significant financial loss to a developer, investors and banks. The construction industry accounts for nearly nine percent of all jobs in Pierce County, and construction generates much-needed revenue that local governments use for public safety and other services.
To receive an extension or for questions, please call the county’s Time Extension Line at (253) 798-7113. Requests for one 24-month time extension must be received between Jan. 1 and close of business June 30, 2009.
