Consumer, advocacy and business groups have pulled together in Pierce County to present a free anti-fraud workshop called Scan Jam. The event will be held May 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tacoma Elks Lodge, 1965 S. Union Ave., Tacoma.
“Each month more than 1,000 calls are received by our Aging and Disability Resource Center help line,” said Sally Nixon, manager of Pierce County Aging and Long Term Care. “Sadly, a good number are from people who are being victimized by various scams.”
Scam Jam will feature Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna and consumer reporter Herb Weisbaum of KOMO 4/KOMO 1000. Representatives of other organizations also will participate. A “Protect Yourself” panel will include local experts on identity theft, exploitation by trusted individuals, powers of attorney, guardianships, and domestic violence.
Throughout the day consumers can browse information tables with dozens of exhibitor booths offering free information, giveaways and helpful hints. Consumer protection organizations will be represented, including the Better Business Bureau, U.S. Postal Inspector, Department of Labor and Industries, AARP, Washington Credit Union League, Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, Federal Trade Commission and Adult Protective Services.
Reservations can be made by calling (253) 798-8787. The first 300 individuals to RSVP will receive a complimentary lunch.
