Problems with the refrigeration system are forcing temporary closure of the ice arena at Sprinker Recreation Center starting today, Oct. 9. The rink is scheduled to reopen the week of Oct. 26 after repairs are completed.
Our ice-making unit is malfunctioning, and were not able to produce the amount of ice needed for the skaters who use the facility, said Jan Wolcott, director of Pierce Countys Parks and Recreation Department. We apologize for any inconvenience this may create for the competitive and recreational figure skaters, adult and youth hockey players, and those wanting to attend our daily public sessions.
Sprinker staff members started noticing problems with the ice during the past week. The Spanaway based rink, which opened in 1976, serves more than 175,000 participants and spectators a year.
For the convenience of the public, periodic updates of the rinks status will be available at 253/798-4040.
