WASHINGTON, May 1, 2019 — The American Bar Association today celebrates Law Day, an annual recognition that our nation is governed by the rule of law.

This year, we celebrate two of our most precious First Amendment rights with a Law Day theme of “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society.” Of course, while it is important to acknowledge these freedoms, we also must dedicate ourselves to understanding and protecting them.

As part of the ABA’s efforts to increase awareness of the American public’s rights and responsibilities, the American Bar Association released the results today of our first Survey of Civic Literacy. We hope to use these results to tailor education programs in the future.

Democracy is not a spectator sport, and knowledge of civic rights and responsibilities are critical to participation.
