Summer hours coming soon at Point Defiance

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium will stay open an hour later each day, beginning Saturday, May 24, for the summer season.

Zoo hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Labor Day. The Zoo will be closed on Friday, July 18, to prepare for the Zoobilee gala that evening. The Zoo also will close by early afternoon on Saturday, July 19, for the family-oriented Zoobilee Encore.

May 24 is opening day for the new “Once Upon a Tide: A Seahorse Odyssey” exhibit in the North Pacific Aquarium. Entrance is free with zoo admission.

Visitors also won’t want to miss seeing the new clouded leopard cubs, born on April 3. The fuzzy cubs, a male and a female, are in a nursery in the World of Adaptations building.

A “Name the Cubs” contest is open to visitors through May 27. Visitors can suggest a name for either cub on their entry forms. They may enter as many times as they like, at $1 per entry. Proceeds from the contest will go to the zoo’s Clouded Leopard Conservation Fund. The contest is sponsored by The News Tribune, The Zoo Society and KAYO Radio in Olympia.

In addition, the zoo staff is stepping up its animal presentation schedule, giving visitors more opportunities for close encounters with dozens of amazing animals. Visit pdza.org for more information.
