Of the 3,600 businesses to incorporate in the state of Washington in 1903, only 37 have stayed in business for 100 years.
One of those businesses, Carman Manufacturing Company of Tacoma, was honored today for a century of being in business.
During a ceremony this afternoon, Secretary of State Sam Reed formally recognized Carman Manufacturing Company for being a corporation owned by the same family for 100 years.
Reed presented a certificate to the owners at Carman Manufacturing headquarters, located at 2626 Willamette Drive NE.
For more than 100 years, four generations of the Carman family have helped build the company into the states largest locally owned mattress manufacturer.
