Tacoma Community College will offer Introduction to Building Codes winter quarter.
This course is targeting anybody who wants cursory knowledge of the building code, said Gordon Aleshire, course instructor and Pierce County building official.
Students are typically professionals in the construction industry who seek a better understanding of the regulations they work with or to become building inspectors.
Course content includes basic concepts of occupancies, types of construction, location on property and exits.
Additional topics include inspection and requirements for residential and light commercial construction from soil consideration, foundation and framing to final inspection.
Students will gain a good overview of building code administration and the technical provisions of the building code, Aleshire said.
The course is one in a series of building code classes. Mechanical Codes is also being offered winter quarter. Students receive a certificate of completion upon successful completion of each course.
Introduction to Building Codes, offered through the colleges Professional Continuing Education program, meets from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.,Thursdays, Jan. 9 through March 13 on TCCs main campus.
The course fee is $175, which does not include the required textbook.
