TCC offers forklift certification class

Forklift Operations Certification will be offered as a one-day Saturday class from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 26, July 10, July 24 and Aug. 7 on Tacoma Community College’s main campus.

The course is appropriate for beginners or experts who seek a higher paying position in an industrial occupation. It provides the prerequisite training required for employment in a forklift operator position, including WISHA and OSHA compliance.

“Employers are most interested in candidates that have met safety certification through proper compliance training,” said Daniel Daugherty, president of Forklift Operator Certification Services (FOCS) and forklift certification instructor at TCC.

Course curriculum includes classroom and practical training, demonstration, and evaluation. Hands-on driver tips, forklift handling and an obstacle course are included. Site-specific equipment, environment and product issues are also addressed, such as forklift designs and fueling procedures, working with ramps and docks, and material handling strategies.

Beginners receive the confidence, knowledge and skills they need to find a job in a market where powered industrial truck operators are in demand, Daugherty said, adding that temporary staffing firms are often hard pressed to find certified drivers.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be certified and issued an identification card valid for three years.

The course fee is $149 and includes an operator manual. Participants must be at least 18 years old and have a valid Washington State driver’s license. To register, call 253.566.5020; pre-registration is required. TCC’s main campus is located at 6501 S. 19th St., Tacoma. To learn more about TCC’s programs, visit:
