Tent city may be headed to Tacoma

Tent cities for the homeless have caused a stir in King County recently, but the phenomenon of mobile shelters is growing around the country. Soon, Pierce County may see one in its back yard, too, according to media reports.

It has been reported that a group looking to model a local shelter after Portland’s “Digital Village” is scouting locations in northeast Tacoma and Spanaway.

“Dignity provides a peaceful community, a clean environment, a center and safety,” organizers say on their Website, but officials and the Portland media have dubbed the concept controversial.

A Pierce County official was quoted as saying that the homeless shelter will need to go through a permit process.
