Tacoma Historical Society and Historic Tacoma will offer two walking tours of the Wedge neighborhood Sat., July 18. The Wedge neighborhood is a part of Tacoma that boasts more than 50 homes dating back 80 years or more. It’s also where Tacoma pioneer Aaron Titlow, candy company entrepreneurs Frank and Ethel Mars, and Titanic survivor Anne Kincaid resided. And it is near Wright Park, the North Slope Historic District, and many of the city’s oldest churches.
Last summer, a group of residents submitted a nomination to the City of Tacoma’s historic preservation office that would designate the neighborhood an historic district. The group would like to see the area — which stretches from Sixth Avenue to Division Avenue, and L Street to Sprague Avenue — receive historic district designation and special protection. The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) continues to review the proposal.
On Saturday, THS and Historic Tacoma will offer two free tours — one at 10:30 a.m. and another at 1:30 p.m.). The tours will start in the triangle pocket park on the south side of Division at Ainsworth. Parking is available in the lot across from the Salvation Army on 6th and Ainsworth.
In March, the Index joined LPC members, Wedge residents and property owners on a similar walking tour. For photos from the tour, visit ihttp://i.feedtacoma.com/TDI-Reporters-Notebook/walking-wedge-photos-from-neighborhood/ .
