WSDOT to host public transportation conference

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is pleased to present the 2005 Public Transportation Conference, “Connecting Washington – Issues and Innovations in Public Transportation.” Over 50 exhibitors and 300 attendees are registered for the August 22-24 conference in SeaTac, Washington.

WSDOT’s 2004 Conference will explore ways to improve connections between services and facilities and system efficiencies that can be achieved using innovative services and technologies. Nationally-known speakers will join local experts to speak on a wide array of public transportation topics.

This year, the conference will include nearly 50 workshops with offerings on intercity and regional planning, all forms of rail, urban and rural transit, public transportation grants, and safety and security.

The conference kicks off Monday with an opening lunch featuring Senator Mary Margaret Haugen and nationally-known travel and commuting expert, Alan E. Pisarski.

On Tuesday, the state’s best transit and Paratransit drivers and mechanics will compete in the Washington State Public Transportation Roadeo held in conjunction with the conference. Tuesday evening, the state will honor top public transportation employees and Roadeo winners at a Recognition and Awards Banquet. After Wednesday’s workshops, the conference will close with Association Awards and a keynote presentation by Bob Drewel, Executive Director, Puget Sound Regional Council.

“The 2005 legislative session was an important one for public transportation and we’ll be highlighting the significant new revenue generated through the 2005 Transportation Partnership Package,” said Judith Giniger, Conference Chair and WSDOT Public Transportation and Rail Division Director. “The conference brings together public transportation professionals from across the state and gives us an opportunity to discuss new and improved services and facilities tailored to our commuters’ and travelers’ needs.”
